A patent is an exclusive right granted by the Government of India to an inventor for an invention, preventing others from making, using, selling, or distributing the invention without permission for a limited period (usually 20 years). Patents in India are governed by the Indian Patents Act, 1970, and administered by the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs & Trade Marks (CGPDTM) under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry.

A Symbol of Patent Protection

Unlike trademarks (™ for unregistered and ® for registered),
But patents do not have a universally recognized symbol. However, the following are used to indicate a patent:

Patented (IN Patent No. XXXXXXX) – Used after the grant of a patent, mentioning the patent number.

Ⓟ (Rarely used) – Sometimes seen in informal contexts, but not legally recognized.
